was wondering what everyones favorite mushroom is? once i get my tank up and cycled the first thing i want to add are some shrooms. so i was hoping some reefers on this board could point me to some really cool ones.

i came across this one the other day and really like it, but would like alittle info on it if possible. it's called the "Ricordea mushroom" and the sites claims that it's really rare. is this true? i'd love to have a rare shroom in my tank. anyone know anything about this species? here are some pics...

well they are pretty rare. I believe this is because their importation was banned for some time, but I am only going by what i have heard here.

I do know this much. My LFS ocassionally gets some in from a reefer he trades with. He got 5 nice rocks with about 6 shrooms each on them recently. They were gone when I went back to get one today (3 days time) at $59 a rock

I can't tell you anything about that particular shroom, but put it in my tank and in about 3 days it will split and double. I would think about putting shrooms in your tank, cause when you get things right they will take over you tank.

so are they as impressive in reality as they are in the picture... cause man those babies look sweet! $59 bucks sounds pretty damn good... i think this site is selling them for like $80 bucks and i doubt they would have 6 shrooms on the rock they ship out. thanks for the info, peace

I love the shrooms. They are the perfect coral... real easy to care for and dont need a heck of a lot of lighting. IMHO you may want to add some cheap mushroom rock first. That way you can get the hang of it for a month or 2 (and your not sacrificing something expensive thats harder to care for). Granted I am no expert but I started my reefing a year ago with 4 different colonies of shrooms. Some I had alot more success with than others (IE metalic blue, purple and fuzzy did very well while my hairy mushroom colony is barely struggling by 9 months later). My advice, get a mushroom colony that is extremely easy and cheaper just to get a little practice and build confidence. There is nothing worse than losing a peice of coral and blaming yourself for improper care.

just my 2 cents because I am human and constantly make mistakes

Wow! That's a really nice shroom! I have some nice ones, but not like that. I'm going to print that pic out and bring it to my LFS and see if he can get it for me.

RED Ricordea is VERY rare. My friend just got one from http://www.aquatic-reflections.com for $50 PER shroom. But the Ricordea that he got looks MUCH better than that picture J Crew. It's COMPLETELY red. Ask Robert Dalton from Aquatic Reflections to get one for you. He specializes in some rare and exotic corals.

I started with mushrooms back in '99. Now the things are taking over my tank. Shrooms have a sting that really packs a whallop. Right now I have to eradicate some shrooms to save an Acropora colony. Be careful what you wish for.

I drive 45 miles specifically to get to this LFS he is the best I have found in my area he often sells shroom rock with 8-10 shrooms on them for $39. So for him this is a high price.
Today I stopped there to buy some Kalc and saw that he got a small credit in one of Tullocks books on invertabrates.
The name of the LFS is wetpets and its well worth my drive. I hope he gets some more in trade soon his were a bright flourescent blue/green coloration absolutely amazing

This particular shroom requires intense lighting. Most of your run of the mill shrooms do better in dim conditions.

The banned Ricordeas are from the Caribbean, within US waters (FL, Puerto Rico, etc.). They were banned not because of the mushroom itself, but more so because of the rock that the shroom attaches to. Collecting live rock and stony corals (read, anything "hard") without a permit in the Caribbean is illegal. Some collectors snuck in Caribbean Ricordeas by shipping them individually, removed from the substrate.

Ricordia exportation was banned from the Keys about 3 yrs ago and has made it more difficult to obtain. Unattached polyps can still be sold.
My LPS (Naperville, IL) always has green ricordia polyps for sale. He charges around $6 ea and when he has a lot they are 2 for 1. They grow fast and split.
I have also seen orange ricordia, but rarely, and it is expensive. A diff LPS has an incredible florescent yellow/green ricordia for $130. Brilliant colors. The owner sd he got those from Tonga. I have never seen red.

can't you take scrap them off and sell/trade them at your LFS or with other reefers?

thanks everyone for the info.

Scrape them off & sell them to an LFS?

I guess you could if the LFS wanted to buy them. But once they move into an area, you can cut the top off (which will grow) and the stump left over will sprout a new head. Then the shroom grows back and starts stinging your coral again. So cutting them gets you new shrooms, but doesn't remove the old stump anchored in the niches or your live rock.
