It would be hilarious if it wasn't such a common question.... I was recently asked about putting a small 1.5" Purple Tang in a 20 Gallon with a Foxface Rabbit Fish. It's not the customer's fault really (though I wish more would buy Scott Michael's Pocket Guide and carry it with them to their LFS) but there are too many stores that would have just sold them the tang.

I overheard the lady that runs our lfs telling the other employees that under NO circumstances were they to give a refund or take back a yellow tang from a certain customer. This customer was told in no uncertain terms to NOT put that tang in her 20 gal that had been up for 2 wks but the cust. insisted the situation would be fine. I don't know what happened later but I'm sure it wasn't pretty...

That book won't fit into any of my pockets, but it is well used. Is there any other books on marine fish (or that specialize in reef fish) that are more in-depth and more exhaustive?

Your tank is too small for any tangs. If a LFS already sold you one, take it back and demand your money back.
Mikos
The best books IME is ReeF Aquariums by Johen Tullock or The Concientious Aquarist by Robert Fenner.

Naesco,

I am SURE he is joking... and I am looking for books on specifically marine fish with species-specific information for aquarists.

Thanks,

Ernie

What's the size of you system? Nano-reef can mean a lot of different things depending on who you're talking to. For example, if I were Mr. 4000, I'd say that everyone on this board is running a nano-reef. However, to the mere commoner like myself, I'm guessing you have a 37 or smaller? I'm not sure about the nomenclature for a nano versus a plain old reef tank.....

It's small enough to take with you. There is nothing smaller or more handy to bring to the LFS with that level of information in it. His larger series "Reef Fishes" is more in depth but Vol2 only recently came out.

Fenner's CMA is good but some of the info in there is a bit dated IMO. Also it aint as handy to bring with you to the LFS and doesn't have as many species in it.

Dave,
I wouldn't go more than 1" of Tang per gallon. So, if you have a 10gal nano, you should be able to put in 3 yellow tangs since they don't get more than 3" in captivity according to my LFS.

That should keep your algae problem down!!!

Disclaimer: For anybody who is new to the reefkeeping hobby (hereafter referred to as "newbies"), the preceding statement was a lame stab at sarcasm. Putting more than 2 yellow tangs in a 10gal tank should be reserved for only experienced hobbyists who have already killed more than their fair share of livestock. All newbies are directed to please discount any and all future sarcastic remarks.

It depends on how you stack them. Using a blender works well too.

Thanks Tom. I was just kidding about the "won't fit into my pocket" thing... It is quite handy.

Supposedly it was released for shipping to distributors but I may be misinformed. I'll contact James at Microcosm and try to find out.
