What are the "rules" for an external pump. I have a Mag Drive 7 (Submersible/External OK) and I want to run it external (if I can). My sump is a 20g glass tank and I would like to run PVC pipe over the side and down to the pump, which would be screwed the bottom of my stand. Would this work? Would the pump suck the water up the PVC and over the top of the sump tank. This picture should illustrate what I am trying to do (should be mag drive 7 in the picture, typo). Any comments would be helpful.

Yes it could work if primed. Any chance of drilling the sump instead? As far as running the mag external no problem. I'm doing that now for my skimmer. They are not the quietest pumps but not bad. Just wrap extra teflon around the connections because they are loose when mated with normal PVC.

IT should work. IF you can find a way to prime the tube going over the wall of the tank.

Why not run it submerged?

Or if you want it external, why not drill and add a bulkhead?
