I just finnished setting up my 55 gallon reef tank. I have a 10 gallon tank underneath for biological filtration and a skimmer. I was thinking of adding another 10 gallon next to it, in this one I would house my heaters, I would move my protein skimmer over, a 1/2 layer of live sand, and grow caulerpa. I am thinking of transfering the water with the use of 2 pumps(one in either tank) circulating the water back and forth.

Any Ideas, Suggestions, or Comments welcome
Thanks
Les

Seems it would be easier to have overflow go to both sumps with a shutoff control to LS sump so as not to disturb sand. You then tie both sumps together with bulkhead and pvc aprox. 1/3 the distance from the top and you have both refuium and 12 1/2 gal sump capacity without additional pumps. My 2C

I have a 15g sps tank and a 10g refugium tied to dual 10g sumps. They are connected as speed suggested except the bulkhead is approx 1/3 of the way from the bottom versus the top. I used 2" pvc with 2 ball valves and one true union so I could close either one or both off and disconnect them when I wanted to. They work great and it lets me run a large in-sump skimmer and all my other equipment without any heads in the main tanks. Also helps to keep bubbles out of the main tank. Good luck. My opinion only.

If you use 1 pump for intake and another for output one eventually they won't work at exactly the same speed and you'll have a slight flood. Why not get a 20 long or even a longer tank and glue in a 3-4" divider so you can fill 2/3 of the length of the tank w/ sand for your refugium and the other portion for heaters/skimmers. HTH
