Has anybody replaced the needle wheel with a regular Sedra impeller on their 5000 model? I heard today that it works just as good.

After having just ordered a CS8-1 w/pump, I am seriously wondering why you are considering or would want to do this. Is there a problem somewhere ?

Deb,
You may or may not find out later on that there is a problem using a needle wheel. I too just ordered a CS6-3. Like I said, somebody told me today the regular impeller works just as good. This person also said getting parts from Euroreef is not that easy. I have to wait for my skimmer becuase they don't have the materials to build it.

If(IF)this is the case and it works just as good then it might make things easier for us.

Have been running a CS8-2 for 18 months now. It's a terrific skimmer. IMO, if the standard impeller "works just as good", the excellent people at Euroreef wouldn't waste their time or money with the needle wheel version. Probably the case is more that the skimmer is so well designed and powerful that it will "work" fine with the standard impeller, but with the needle wheel it KICKS A$$

I only have the needle wheel that came with the skimmer (CS8-2 with sedra 5000)... I would really be suprised if it worked as well with the regular impeller, but curious to hear if anyone has any experience with this.

Mark, this may or may not apply to your question. When I was using a weaker needle wheel skimmer (Turboflotor 1000) I decided to scrap the stock Rio 2100/w needle wheel and plumb it with a mag 7/w stock impleller. Before doing this I was using an air pump to force air into the venturi of the TF 1000 to get it to work half way decently. After the mag addition I no longer needed the air pump and was also skimming more and darker crude than before. You can read what you want into this but in the Turbo's case I don't see the need for the needle wheel. The claim about smaller bubbles etc. could just be hype.

SeaSydney,
If you can fit it I would go for a bigger one. If you notice the next size up goes to a Sedra 5000.

Yowsers, well golfish, for this price I will be sure to report what's happenin' - hope you will too !

Also, I'd like to believe it's not that hard to get parts, as I sent them some email on a Sunday, and got a reply...something I don't see that often.

Deb,
LOL, an e-mail is easy to send. I have sent Jeff a few e-mails and he always gets back to me the same day. I noticed yesterday they don't list the pinwheel in their parts section. I'm not to concerned about getting parts. I just wanted to know if anybody has used the standard impeller. It looks like nobody has except for my LFS. I have been looking and reading for a skimmer upgrade close to a year now. I still think I made the best choice.
