i am in the process of plumbing my new 72G that has a builtin overflow, with the holes drilled at the bottome of the tank. I am in doubt as to where the rubber gaskets go:
1)
##### <- Bulkhead
===== <- Gasket
||||| <- Tank
##### <- Bulkhead

or
2)

##### <- Bulkhead
||||| <- Tank
===== <- Gasket
##### <- Bulkhead

and should i only put silicone on the side that does not have the gasket? or on both sides?

Thanks in advance for the responses

gasket goes inside the tank, or at least between the actual bulkhead and glass..not between the plastic nut and the glass

and i wouldn't use silicone anywhere..trust me, it will be watertight

That would be door #1 SIR =)

bulkhead, gasket, tank, nut.

We like to put a little silicone on the tank side of the gasket but thats really not necessary.

You want to be careful not to overtighten because the gasket can be pinched out and may cause a leak, the simple fix is to loosen the nut slightly.

Bulkhead, gasket, tank, nut. But, I have recently started adding a gasket on the outside, so it goes bulkhead, gasket, tank wall, gasket, nut. This allows me to overtighten a bit and create a seal on both sides. I'll probably have to replace the gasket at some point in the future, but I think that this will work better and give a tighter seal.

i ended up putting bulkhead, gasket, silicone, tank, silicone, nut.

there is an even ring of silicone around the top and bottom of both bulkheads and i tightened them with my hands as tight as they would go- was scared of using a wrech for the same oooooooohhhhhh @#$@#$@#$ reason NaCl mentioned
