I bought some live rock over the internet, and my tank was not set up, I bought it because it was a sale for 45 lbs of figi rock for $100.00 when at my lfs it would be $270.00. After the rock got to my house, I had to let it sit for 2 day, while I finnished painting my basement, and setting up my tank. Now my rock has a lot of this white thick hairy fungus on it. I am not sure it this is because i let the rock sit in the box for two days, or if it is normal? If not can I get rid of it?
Thanks
Les

I was thinking that it could have been because I had missed some of the newspaper that was used to pack the rock, but I am honestly not sure... Any suggestions?

I would first get the rock into some saltwater with the right water parameters before it all turns into base rock. The fungus and other things on it you don't want can be scrapped off with a small brush.

Good Luck

That would be mold and mildew on your rock. If you let it sit for 2 days, it might as well be dead. Anything you have on it is definitely dead by now, and it is rotting away to boot. The fact that you have fungus growing on it is a bad thing. I think I would start over with the rock (dry it out completely or bleach it), IMO it's probably useless now, and more harmful than good for saltwater inhabitants.

DO NOT BLEACH IT! Get it in some saltwater and it it will probably be decent after a heavy cycle. Live Rock sits in the boxes for more than 2 days on a regular basis. I have mine shipped 2 day and then it sits another day or two sometimes. I do not use a brush on it.

If it was good Live Rock when shipped to you, it will most likely be fine.

Best wishes,
Ray

I would say brush off anything that looks dead and get the rock into some salt water. I mail ordered some live rock and it took FedEx 4 days to get the package to me. There was plenty of life that bloomed from the rock after a couple of weeks in my tank. Lots of coralline, several types of macro algae, little feather dusters, orange polyps, worms, a crab, and many other unidentified things.
