I went to the local saltwater fish store the other day to get some store credit for some frags. When I was at the counter, this guy says to one of the employees: "yeah, I need a skimmer to bring down my nitrates. I have a 300 gal tank with a 100 gal wet dry with a white tip reef shark, and 2 leopard sharks in it." Needless to say, the employee basically says they don't condone the keeping of the white tip etc. and that it pisses them off to hear stuff like that. The guy gets all defensive and says "well when it gets too big I can just give it to the zoo no big deal"
All I have to say is people like this piss me off and I just wanted to hurt him. I left the store muttering some choice words hoping he heard me yet I know with someone like that it would do no good.

Yea people who do that sort of thing are just intollerable. I had some guy who wanted to keep Ciclids in a goldfish bowl, of course i told him he couldn't. Even went as far as to make a bit of a joke saying "you cant ben the laws of biology Jim". He bought the bowl regardless, came back the next day and tryed to buy a Trisephallus. I told him to go away, and never come back, we dont need his business.

Last time I was at my LFS there was a customer pestering the salesperson to sell him a large powder blue tang (~5") for his 20g. Fortunately the salesperson told him no...After which he promptly went to another tank and started asking about a large (~10") wrasse. It makes me wonder about all the fish-cruelty stories we haven't heard...

Our Petco has really gone down the tubes since the last sales person who cared left. First off they have way overstocked tanks. Since the power crisis here in California they removed all of the free standing sales tanks. This effectivly reduced the marine tanks by 3/4. However, who ever is doing the ordering has not reduced the deliveries. The last time I was in there was a 55gal tank, may have been smaller, with 12 yellow and 7 purple(gray)tangs. But that wasn't the worst of it. Two employees were there coimpaining about how with all the sales the water levels had really gone down. One took the hose from the sink, dropped it in the tank and turned the water on. The other reached under the counter grabbed a cup of salt and poured it in the tank.

I had a talk with the manager. She agreed that it was not a good practice but with high school students "whadda ya going to do?"
