Tank has been up almost 4 weeks now. Have LR and LS in for 2 weeks. No ammonia. Low nitrites. Cycle coming to end. Each day, I add additives, and turkey baste the rock.

Yesterday I turkey basted a piece of brown stuff, and a 1/2 golfball chunk of the rock flew off the top revealing a crater of "black" area. Definitely dead. Smelled bad initially - no ammonia spike though. All kinds of black debris on top of the sand now.

Should I - cleanup this debris asap?? Wont siphoning remove beneficial critters??

Should I continue turkey basting this area to see if anymore stuff falls out??

Comments / Recommendations??

Thanks!

Definately clean off dying matter. It will help cycle faster. You will not lose any beneficial bacteria.
