In 2 post I saw a reference to "DSB". Once as as something "like a plenum" and once as something that should be set-up if a skimmer is out of the question.
What the heck is a DSB?
Sorry, I'm a year into this reef habit and sometimes still little behind on abreviations.
DSB = Deep Sand Bed
Plenum = DSB with a cavity of sorts under it to aid in anaerobic respiration
Basically, it's two schools of thought on denitrification in our closed ecosystems. The plenum is just a variation on the DSB that utilizes a mesh or something similar to suspend the substrate above the bottom of the tank, creating a space for water to be present.

LOL I have to disagree. DSB is the varaition.
fishboy- The plenum is what the skimmer is generally not recommended for.
