I just set up a 180 gallon tank in my living room and the pump is far too loud. I have 1 Little Giant 4mdx-sc and it overpowers my whole living room. Are there any ultra quiet external pumps? Or, in the alternative, what is a good recommendation for an submersibble (or multiple sumbersibble) pump to replace the little giant. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, if you are looking for a circulation pump, the quiet one is so quiet, you cant tell its running. I havent used it long so i dont know how reliable they are. Other than that all i can tell you is any fan cooled, especially if its a pressure pump, is gonna be noisy. It might help to put an old mouse pad under the pump and enclose the back of your stand if its open. My mak 4 skimmer pump was so luod, like your setup/ its in my living room, and the aforementioned modifications helped tremendously.

I'll second Rainbow Quiet One's they are incredibly silent. For a 180 I'd suggest you run two however.

Reliability on the Quiet One's is mixed. Most run like troopers, but I've had a few returned because they run warm and trip their thermal breaker and must be sent back to El Monte to be refurbished. Usually that is under the 1 year warranty or at least you just have to pay shipping. Rainbow is pretty good about that.

For complete silence the Rainbow Quiet One can hardly be beat. The only problem is that they do throw some heat back into the tank. With your 180g this may not be an issue. On a smaller tank it certainly can be. Other than the heat addition they seem to be pretty solid pumps IMO.
