My girlfriend came down this morning and said my prized purple tang was missing.

I said he's probably hiding in one of his favorite spots.

A few minutes later she said he was really missing. So I looked all over the tank and no tang. My heart sank an I started searching the floor....

He committed suicide last night by jump four inches above the water to a two and a half inch slot the runs the length of the back of my canopy. Once on the floor he managed to slither eight feet until he worked his way into a corner of the room. That's where I found him.

It was a sad morning and feel so bad. I immediately disconnected wires and pipes, removed the canopy and covered the slot with fiberglass screen.

But I still miss my tang........

Sorry to hear about your loss. I just had the same thing happen to me with my foxface so I can totally sympathise. I think mine was run out of the tank by my 4 stripe damsel (whom I've decided is posessed) and I cannot catch after a week of trying

I've resorted to buying a $50 trap to catch a $5 fish. Never again will I put another damsel in my tank. It's amazing to me how the fish we love seem to have things like this happen to them, and the fish we want out, we can't bait them out.

Also had a loss this weekend. My Blue Head wrasse is go AWOL. I can not find him but I am thinking that my carpet anemone, 9in, got a late night snack. I know a blue head is the wrong thing to put in the tank with other fish. He/she offed two true percula's. But I still hate to see him go.

I sympathise with you. Fish can be remarkably dexterous at times, finding small gaps like the one you mentioned. About all I could suggest would be a grate/grille made of inert material (plastic perhaps) spanning the opening in the back of the canopy to keep fish and other animals in, yet allowing air and venting for circulation.

Some of the gobies are renowned carpet surfers so you'll probably need to take some preventative measures if you ever want to keep them.

Good luck in future.
