Hi Jenni,
The best way to control algae is to control the nutrient levels in the tank. To give you better advice, we could use some more info on the size of the tank, how long it has been running, and then some measurements: ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, phosphate, calcium, temperature, and specific gravity.
The algae uses excess nitrates and phosphates in the tank as food. What kind of algae is this? What does it look like?
I found some good info once upon a time by going to about.com and typing in "aquarium algae control."
Good luck.
