I currently have 1 perc clown in my 110 gallon reef. He is hosting in what my LFS Hawian Carpet and has been in my tank with the carpet for 9 months.

I recently purchased a saddle carpet about 1 week ago and I would like to get another clown if possible. What would be the choice? Would the perc be to territorial? The carpet is on the other side of the tank and has already anchored to the bottom of the tank so I dont think its going anywhere. I would like to get a goldstripe maroon or another perc. But I want to ask and find out before I add something that is incompadible and that will cause stress in the tank.

Thanks for all your input!! John

John,
Clownfish territoriality extends beyond its favorite place to hang out in your tank. Remember, these are members of the Damsel family. Besides, your "old" Clown may take a liking to the "new" anenome. They will switch around.
If you get another, get a much smaller Percula than the one you have and there's a good chance they will bond into a pair. I once added an Ocellaris of the same size as the other and the "old" one harassed the newbie unmercifully....it later died...I added another smaller one and they are great buddies.
Maroons are even more territorial than Percs and this would be an invitation to a gunfight!

Joyce Wilkerson's Clownfishes and Their Host Anenomes is an excellent book for anyone keeping these great fish.

I would add another smaller Perc to make a pair. It is not recommended to keep several species of clown together. If you really wanted to I would add a pair of Pink Skunk. I got a pair of Ocellaris and a pair of Pink Skunk in my 400 g tank. Maroon clown need to be by themself (either single or in pair). They will eventually kill any other clown in the tank.

If you're talking about true percula clowns, I don't know a thing about them. If you're talking about the ocellaris clown, which is referred to as a percula clown, IME they are not territorial or aggressive towards other clowns. I maintained a pair of maroons with several false percs before without any aggression on the part of the percs. The maroons wouldn't let them near their half of the tank, but that's to be expected since maroons are pretty agressive creatures at times. Right now, I have 1 cinammon clown I inherited from a friend, and he and a domino damsel pretty much fight over anemones all day long, they will both sit in the anemone and circle around in it. It never gets to be more than posturing, and sometimes they even hang out together in the anemone peacefully. I would say make yours a pair, but if you want to branch out, be careful of what kind you get. Oh yeah, I have also added a clarkii clown to the mix in the past with the same results, he didn't seem to fight with the false percs at all, but the maroons kept him away from their half of the tank.
