just wondering what is a good test to buy for calcium?

I use the Lamotte calcium kit. You can get it at Petwarehouse for like 25 bucks which is real bargin. It's a titration style kit so it is real easy to read the measurements. I have never seen Lamotte mentioned on this board but most people I know have said good things about them. I only use the calcium kit from them because most of their stuff is kinda pricey. Next time I might try the Seachem one because I really like their stuff. Just go to Petwarehouse.com and do a search for Lamotte and you will see all their test kits. Hope this helps.

what about;Aquarium Systems Test Kits- FasTest and SeaTest test kits? any good, I know there not the best but will they work?

I had a lot of difficulty with the LaMotte Calcium test. I got a lot of false high readings. Don't get me wrong I really like LaMotte, I think they have a really awesome test kit line. I just never liked their Calcium test. I use LaMotte for most of my tests and Salifert for Alk and Ca. I am not sure of the ones you mentioned, never used them.

I've had a really difficult time with the LaMotte Calcium kit for a couple reasons. The main one being that I find the titration procedure very difficult to read accurately - the procedure is to add the reactant with the titrator until the color turns to purple and then again to blue - well purple and blue are pretty close and therefore the range of where you stop varies. Secondly, you have to add a very little amount of your tank water, then dilute with distilled water - makes the test more time consuming and harder to get accurate.
