Now I'm thinking about a mini tank..maybe 10-25 gallons. Maybe just a seahorse, a shrimp and blennie or something like that. I could fit it in a corner of the living room (if its real small) and then if I really it I could then go with the big one. The price of distillers are around 1,800.00 dollars!YIKES Hey?..which brings my $7,000.00 dollars up to about 9,000.00 What if I don't like it as much as I think I will. This way I could just bring home a gallon or 2 at a time from the store. If I buy a 55 or 75 I'd have to get rid of it to make room for the big one. This way I can keep the tiny one too.

Distiller? What the heck is that and why on Earth do you need one?

Get a good RO unit. They cost less than $200 online.

Not good enough for our well water Mark. For them to work you have to have less then 3ppm.

Isn't there any way you could have a sediment filter in-line with the RO/DI that would produce water of <3ppm. There are even pumps to bring the line pressure up so that wont be a problem. $2000 is quite a bill. And besides dont those things have a tendancy to blow up, or is that just an old wives tale.

I think you should go with the mini-reef, but also look into finding an RO/DI that will suit your water requirements. Call a manufacturer up and tell them your water parameters. I bet there is not water out there that an RO/DI unit could not filter out.

Anyways if you start a mini-reef you can almost bet that you will soon upgrade. The distiller will also leach copper into the water. that will end up killing your reef.

many people on this site have "small tanks" with success I have a 37 gallon there are also people with 29 and smaller.

I had a good website on my favorites list but lost it in my last system crash

It was nano-reef.com or something similar but a search on nano's will give you at least 1,000 sites to choose from

3 ppm what?

People use RO to make drinking water from seawater, so it can be done.

Here's a quote from the Spectrapure web site. Note the 500 ppm spec at the end:

SpectraPure® Reverse Osmosis & Deionization Systems (RO/DI), provide superior rejection of ionic, organic and particulate impurities and thus produce contaminant-free water. Line-pressure operated systems operate on feed-line pressure. We use superior quality TFC membranes on our RO systems. TFC membranes used are rated at standard feed conditions of 60 PSI (4.1 Bar) at 77°F (25°C), and 500 ppm TDS (750 µS conductivity).

I have a 7 gallon bowfront sitting right here on my desk at work. It houses a pair of harlequin shrimp, a friedimani dottyback, 2 emerald crabs, 1 cleaner shrimp, 6 astrea snails, 10 nassarius snails, 1 hermit crab and some star polyps and mushrooms.

Lynn,

With a tank that small you could easily purchase gallon jugs of RO water. Some supermarkets sell it, petstores might have it, or even in some locations there are stores just for water.
Check it out. May be a whole lot easier than buying a distiller.
