I have been running a Precision Marine skimmer for the past two years with good success. Lately it has been acting up...water level going up and down, very inconsistent bubbles, etc. I tracked down the problem to a clogged air inlet. The fix was simple...take off the air vent tube at the water intake and clear it out with a round toothpick. Now it's working like a charm.

(A simple diagnostic is to blow down the tube and see if it is hard to blow or makes a rattling noise.)

HTH someone.

A clogged venturi is the most common reason for changing water levels in a skimmer (when you've done nothing to change the levels). Mine was clogged so bad one time that I took it out and set it up in a 5G bucket with freshwater and vinergar. After 24 hour there was no change. I added a couple of cuts of bleach and voila, 10 minutes later it was all fixed.

Any other tricks out there???

I use hot water and vinegar to loosen the calcium deposits up in the venturi and then scrap it off with a thin piece of metal like the end of a paper clip. Then I rinse it under hot water. I'm done in less than 5 minutes.
