Hi guys, my life fell apart yesterday when my 300 gallon tank made by Clearseal blew apart i.e. the front glass just blew off and wiped out my house. I hopefully saved the corals tanks are being set up quarantine etc fully stocked etc but life doesn't feel like its worth living. In $ terms the tank set up, let alone life which is my main loss (as devastated with the fish I'd raised for years) was US$20K and its gone. Help!

I sympathize. I lost a 125 gallon tank packed with corals when the glass sheath on a heater broke. At least you have a chance at saving some of your livestock. Take some minor comfort that it could be worse.

Sorry to hear that, but why did the glass shatter?
Insurance is not likely going to pay for this, sorry to say..., but you can always give it a try. How bad is the house damage? Need to change out carpet? After picking up the corals into the quaranteen tank, you can always hire handy man to help clean up. Oh, get some air fresheners too, you will need it.....

I can't think of a worse thing that could happen to a reefer.
I am so sorry that this happened to you.
Definitely worth checking your Homeowners Ins. and contacting the tank manufacturer. Even if way out of warranty, manufacturer's don't like to have this type thing reflect on their product.
Of course, any $$$ recovery won't help the hurt, but would help with the cleanup.

Is that an acrylic or glass tank. I am ordering a 300gal acrylic tank at the moment. I don't know what would I do if it burst. That is a lot of water consider it is on the second floor. It will be a lot of damage to the floor and ceiling. What cused it to burst ?

On the upside, I glued in a new piece of glass and made a vivarium for raising poison dart frogs and orchids and discovered a whole new obsession.
Now I have a 65, a 40, and a 150 full of plants and frogs, and am about 75 pages into a book I'm writing on the subject while I'm learning it. Not sure when I will have a reef again...

OMG!!! how could this happen??? I feel so so bad for you. I know you've had some of these fish for years! A person can't start to describe all the emotions, time and money that goes into this. Where were you when this happened? I really do feel terrible for you. I wish I had something to say to help, but there's not much a person can say. Sorry
that has always been one of my worst fears, that a tank would somehow split at the seams and blow apart, as you described. i've even asked several of my LFS over the years if this was possible and they'd always look at me like i was wearing my stupid sign.
i can't give you any advice because i don't know what to say. but i'm glad you were able to save some of your babies.

As much as I feel bad about the loss of corals, it pales in comparison to the disruption and damage to your personal life. 300 gallons is an awful lot of water. I know, I have a 360 gallon tank and my biggest fear is what happened to you.
Definitely check with your home insurance. The cost of the tank may not be covered, but damages to your house may.

The only thing that even remotely similar happened to me was when I lived in texas a friend who was taking care of my tank did me a favourand shut off the air in my apartment to save me on my electricity bill
July+Texas+no Air= poached fish
but that was only a fresh water tank. The stench was horrendeous and I still lost $200+ in fish I cant even imagine your pain

You guys are great! thanks for all the support. Clearseal are a UK company whole specialise in custom made tanks to your specs. I planned the big tank for over a year and had a client of mine build a state of the art art deco stainless steel stand built to fit this tank with twin 500 watt halides, totally gorgeous ($ x thousands!). If we had been in our normal lounging position I would not be here today as 12 mm glass hit the far wall at some pace as the sharp splinters penetrated everything. There was no glass on the front left at all! so the LFS agent summised that the whole front glass blew off in one piece and has since stopped the building of a 9 foot tank in a local restaurant due to fear as its positioned over the bar!!!!!! (some place for a peaceful reeftank!). Anyway the house was fully insured and so was the tank and equipment but the corals and fish lost exceeded $3,000 and are not covered, total cost and loss of aquarium system between 15 and 20 thousand dollars (equivalent as we deal in Pounds!). The house is like destroyed on the ground floor and smells like the beach when the tides gone out and seaweed is baking in the sun. All I would say is to be careful where you sit or lie as no warning was given and this system is only 10 months old. I now have the equvalent of 150 gallons in tank space in the garage rigged up with spare equipment holding the surving (at the moment) corals and 250 - 300 pounds of live rock!

Do you know what kind of glass was used in the construction of it? Has there been any special treatment done to it? 12mm sounds like about 1/2" panel. I do not know of many manufacturers that makes 150+G with just 1/2" panel. When I special ordered my tank, I specifically requested 3/4" panel to be used. Wonder if the thickness is what's responsible for this incidents?
