Some shrimp and crabs need EXTREMELY SLOW ACCLIMATION. Some don't. 2 days ago I acclimated some Stylophora and didn't see the little commensal crab hiding in the branches. Next day he was fine. But with shrimp & porcelain crabs & Tridacna, I do a VERY, VERY slow acclimation for 24 hours w/ an airstone in the bag and an IV drip. All my LFS sources keep their specific gravity about 1.020 while my tank is about 1.026 so I do my buying on the weekends.

I have a 75g with lots of healthy corals, a sailfin tang, a bangaii cardinal, snails, and 20 red-leg hermits. I got two cleaner shrimp about six months ago. Both died within an hour of introduction.

I figured the problem was either acclimation or that my alkalinity and pH were not spot-on perfect.

My alkilinity is high now and my pH stays around 8.3 thanks to reef builder and a little buffer slowly added over several weeks. Since my shrimp death and repairing the pH problem I have added a naso tang (about two weeks ago), which is also healthy and beautiful.

Yesterday I decided to try again. The two shrimp were dead withing 45 minutes of introduction despite 1 1/2 hours of floating the bag with the main lights off and slooowly adding my tank water to the bags. In fact, they showed signs of death almost immidiately upon going into the tank.

I have a smaller 29g tank and have never experienced this problem! Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!!
