Algae

My 75 reef is currently experiencing some time of green algae. It's not hair algae, it's a small green string algae that is on the rocks in places. I'm also getting a bit of cyano. Total maybe a 3"x3" patch of it all together throughout my tank. What can I do to get rid of all these algaes? I do use ro water. Note RO, not RO/DI. Also, I don't have a phosphate test kit so i'm not sure what it's at. As far as everything else is concerned, i'm looking great. What to do?

If possible, increase your PS and add carbon for a couple of days.

you can try harvesting it to death. keep going in with a (virgin) toothbrush and brushing the junk. siphon off the algae. add new water to replace.
you have to be diligent. takes a few sessions, but will get the job done.
you have to control nutrient levels or it will come back.

Get more algae eaters. Under natural conditionsalgae is growing everywhere on the reef, but you don't see much of it. Why not? Because it is constantly being eaten! There are algae grazers everywhere. Mostly large herbivorous fish. It is difficult to replicate this natural balance in a small reef tank like a 75g so everyone tries to cut nutrients back to almost nothing. Do what you can in that area but the real solution is predation.

You might want to consider adding a DI. I use a Spectrapure five stage unit and I have to replace my anion cartridge every month or two. An RO alone can let a lot of phosphates and silicates pass through.
