We are about to buy a RO system. We want it for our 20G tank (we use Catalina water for all changes so the RO will be just for top off's) and for drinking water. I was deciding between spectrapure Three-Stage MaxPure™ MPRO-60, and Daves Reef Pure Cyclone 3-Stage RO 50 GPD.

My confusion came when I saw that both companies sell drinking water systems that seem to include a small storage tank and a long reach faucet BUT the filtration is 5mic. instead of 1.

Can I buy the aquarium system and just hook it up to a long reach faucet or do I need the storage container and what ever else comes with the system that is designed for drinking water?

Thanks
wendy

You can use the aquarium type w/ the long faucet, but the purpose in the storage tank is that the output of many RO/DI units is VERY LOW, so to fill a glass of water while you wait can take a while.

hi.
In addition, there is a carbon post-filter between the faucet and the holding tank.

Thanks
we went with the reef pure 5 stage drinking water system. We can upgrade the unit to DI later if we want and the holding tank seems important for daily use.

Thanks again

I think you're definitely going to like it once it's under the sink and running!

I always understood that it wasn't wise to drink D.I. water, R.O yes but not water passed through the D.I. filter, is this a falicy then?

I think the argument is that you do not get any minerals from drinking DI water.

I personally can't see this is much of an issue since most people don't use water as their sole source of food...

Maybe there's some other reason - I can't imagine what it is though.

hi.
Agree. The mineral argument is not legit, but, again, drink DI water is a waste of money.

Someone once said:

You will have rotten teeth since you need the flourine in the water!

What brand is your toothpaste?

<blockquote><font size="1" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">quote
You need the Ca, Na and other essential mineral in the tap water!

You get more mineral by French-kissing people.

Just my opinion, but...

RO is excellent for drinking. There are more units sold in this country for drinking then anything else.

Fluoride used as a topical treatment is great. It replaces calcium due to the fact it has a stronger attraction to the "bone" Yes I know teeth are not bone, but the same thing happens.

When you do drink it, it is the bone that will lose calcium. Not good. Fluoride is concentrations as low (and lower) as 20 ppm will cause teeth to fall out, bones become very brittle (not good).

I agree that water is not a source of "food", water is for hydration. Some folks say that the minerals in water are good for you. The minerals (most all of them) in in "rock" form. Your body can not use them. Worse case they form kidney stones.

So, in my opinion DRINK RO WATER

or not

Just to let you all know, RO water is the best water you can drink compared to anything else. Also, that bottled water people love to drink is the same as filtered tap water, which just removes the chlorine taste. People seem to think that happy little elves sit atop the mountain springs filling bottles of water

The VALID reason given regarding why people should not drink DI water is the fact that the DI resin can break loose and can contaminate the water. In essence when you drink DI water, you drink the pure water plus a trace amount of the DI resin.
Drinking pure water does not harm a person.

-Before anyone purchases one of these units I would advice that you do a search under Reefpure on the Vendor Experience forum on Reef Central. The amount of reading should keep you busy for a few hours  . Just a heads up for my fellow hobbiest.
