What's the next wave in reef technology that will make a mark in the development of succesful closed system marine aquaria?

1970s - UG filter method
- Diatom Filtration (Sterile system)
- Multi-chamber biological filtration
Jaubert System
1980s - Wet/Dry Trickle Filtration method
- Algae Turf Scrubber
1990s - Berlin System
- Deep Sand Bed
late 1990s - EcoSystem Method

2000 & beyond - ??

Don't get too hung up on timeline. Thet are simply 'off-the-head' estimates.
The intention is to look at new innovation to further our knowledge and expertise in our common passion for responsible, succesful reef keeping.

Happy reefing

I wouldn't put all of your eggs into the ecosystem basket, in my opinion a yellow tank is not sucessfull. There sales startegy seems far to confident with an "all you need" attitude, and only expirience would tell you otherwise. I personally feel that Hybryd style systems will be the next big thing.

The system im planning will be basically a hybryd of four systems.

Berlin system
DSB (3 inches oolitic Sand)
Macro algal 24hr refugeum on small bits of rock suspended on eggcrete with a layer of mud below.
Ozone & UV filtration
Kalkwasser & Calcium reactors

On top of this i will be using two reactors, one for Phytoplancton and one for Zooplanction. Both of these will run off timers to give a daily dose of nutrients to the system.

Come to think of it i think we have entered a new age, the age of refugeums. I dont think that many people will employ sumps for the sole purpose of holding water any more. If there are any major changes to be made to equipment then i think lighting will probably be the next one to surge, possibly LED cluster systems. And i bet you they bring them out just after i spend £1000 on a bunch of MH ballasts and bulbs. But then again thats fish keeping for you.

Love the question though, very interesting. What do you think?

I think you will see more and more simplistic systems and a complete divergence from most technology. Also I think you will see larger and larger volumes of sumps and refugiums that are even larger than the main display system. 30 gallon display sitting on a large stand with a 100 gallon sump/refugium.

I think we will use less gadgets like Ozone & UV filtration, and use more biological and algea filtration.

Many thanks to all for sharing your thoughts.

I felt reef aquaristics have reach an advanced stage of understanding where the means of providing a successful/sustainable closed system ecology can be mastered at hobbyist level.

I believe in the short term, most system will be more synergistic, employing successful features of different systems.

I look forward to the next breakthrough . . . don't know when, but certainly hope for simplified system that do not cost a bomb to start and maintain.

Anyone else to share you thoughts?

Cheers
