Do they eat the microfauna? A lot? a little? No?
Are they reef safe?
What experience do you have with them?

My concern is I like the microfauna and I want to keep it. I have a super fat mandarine who is too satisfied. I do like the white sand. I do still have tons of life in the bed, so I don't want it to end. I'm not sure if it is the breeding ground for the microfauna.

They do eat the microfauna. I'm not sure what size sand bed they will wipe out but it probably depends on the current size of the star. I wouldn't have one in my tank. It it's just white sand you're after and you have enough bed I would look into some type of mopping cucumber.

I've had 2 in a 180 for about 1 year. I love em. my sand bed (really a plenum with 4" on top) is crawling with all types of life and yet it is still white.
