Purigen is a polishing resin that removes organics in a similar way to carbon. It works so well that it can prevent nitrate from forming (not the same as removing nitrate - which is an untrue claim the product makes).

It's great stuff - I have half a litre in my tank.

It will not help will red slime though - or at least it won't get rid of it.

I'm from the "sledge-hammer" school of thought and, all other things okay, would not hesitate to add an antibiotic. I'm also not afrair to post here that I would do this.

Many will say that it will go away by itself. I'll say that it might - eventually.

Some will claim that they did this and then their XYZ died. I say it was going to die anyway.

Others will beg you not to do that for reason XXX. These are the same people who until recently refused to even consider that a DSB might be beneficial.

On the three ocassions I have done this (in 3 different tanks and years apart) I've had NO ill effects, NO return of the problem, and a FAST fix.

Red slime grows like that flesh eating bug you hear about. If you had this I bet you'd not dream of just changing your bandage once a day and hoping for the best.

I used to say that you shouldn't use an antibiotic.

I have now done so in two separate cases in two different tanks. I used a single dose of eurythromycin. The cyano was gone in 2 or 3 days and never came back. All the nitrogen-fixing bacteria did fine. The corals and anemones did fine. The fish did fine. I did this 6 months ago in one tank and a year ago in the other. In both cases it worked beautifully.

I wouldn't do this immediately, but if you can't get rid of the stuff or it is endangering something, I would definitely recommend what I did.

thanks.I was initally going to use red slime remover.A product containing erythromycin, but thought to myself"hey that wouldn't be good".So I bought a fighting conch,a cucumber and a sand sifting starfish.Maybe the s.s starfish is actually stirring the bed up so much it is making my problem worse?Anyway, this stuff appears in the morning and gradually worsens as the day progresses.Near days end it is almost completely gone, only to reappear again the next day and so on.I'll give the purigen a go and see what happens.Last resort will be the slime remover.

Do you use RO or DI water? Do you use kalkwasser?

They will both help with the organics added during water changes and topup water.

I think you should check your foods, additives, and makeup water before looking for miracle cures or chemical(antibiotic)treatments.

Yes I do use a ro unit that I have also installed a di unit to it.I also drip kalk 24/7.Maybe I am mixing the kalk too strong and it is not performing as it should. No hair algae though. The red slime came in on a lfs purchase that I made approx 3 months ago.It had to be the live rock purchase that I made because it showed up shortly after the purchase.Up until that point I did not have it.My tank is 75gal and I have been doing routine 5gal w/c a week.A little improvement, not much though.

I have used chemi-pure,good product.Does not last as long as they say though. The purigen I put in has polished the water quite nicely though.I'll have to wait and see if it has any impact on the cyano.Funny thing is that I cannot understand though is that it appears about midday, builds up throughout the day and eventually dissapears by the end of the day.Almost like it can't make up it's mind as to what it wants to do.

AnotherGoldenTeapot & AOTS,

What is your source for the eurythromycin? What form and where do you get it? Thanks!

I have used the red phosphate pads for slime and hair algae (2/package and a pack of erthromysin)
the erthoromysin did not faze anything. I do not have a lot of stonies. Do have leather corals, mushrooms, etc. It did help. However, red slime did come back. I need to fix the phosphates in the tank and am currently trying out Chemi-pure (looks like carbon to me) and the white Poly pad. the red slime is far less but the hair algae it starting to take hold. someone told me feeding brine shrimp ups your phosphates. amber
