I've think I'm finally through the ammonia spike and am currently trying to keep the nitrites down. Any suggestions on doing this or are frequent water changes the only way to keep the levels down? How long can I expect the nitrite spike to last?
Also, I've been running a modified skilter (with limewood bubble stone) with the filter in place. How often should the carbon and pre-filter be replaced or is rinsing only required?
Thanks again

Let the nitrites do their thing. In 2-4 weeks, you'll see a natural recession of nitrites, and a slow buildup of nitrates. When this happens, you're good to go.

As for the skilter, I recommend removing the entier pre-filter/carbon media, and just stick in a bag of granular activated carbon. Replace the carbon bag every 2 weeks. Reason I don't recommend the skilter's media is 1. the pre-filter is a detritus trap and will cause nitrate problems and 2. they're over-priced and not very effective.

I agree. You could get rid of all of the filter media (assuming you've got liverock). A lot of people will drop in a bag of carbon for 3 days each month to "polish" the water.

I wouldn't bother with waterchanges until the cycle is over. Just let it run its course. IMO, waterchanges just make the cycle go longer.
