Tall tanks are particularly undesirable for reef tanks for many reasons (reduced exchange rates, difficult to aquacape, etc.). I doubt you'll find other people using a 30XH.
I had a 30 XH tank set up for about 2 years but took it down for an out-of-state move.
I agree, the XH is not the most desirable tank. But I had a 20H (24 x 12) stand and canopy and I wanted a bigger tank than 20 gallons, so I went with the 30 XH.
I had a CPR BakPak and 2 MJ1200s behind the rockwork. Live rock was 44 lb. box of cured from PA. 4 inch aragamax sandbed. Lighting was 4 75 watt VHO tubes.
I successfully kept LPS, SPS, and a medium sized carpet anenome/sebae clown for 2+ years.
So while not the best option, it can definitely be done!!!
