Dave,

Don't use them myself, but have heard of a couple people out there toying with them on those larger Rubbermaid Farm Troughs... About all you're going to find is Hydroponic's merchandise.. Some of which is very inappropriate for our reefs. If you just wanna grow a lot of Macro, you're golden, but while much of your stuff will acclimate and grow , I don't know if you'll like the colors. If you manage to find one with a pleasing color, I'd be interested in hearing about it. I've got my eye's on a larger sized container for my basement as well, and the 3200K 1000 Watt lamp I got from work isn't really what I want to use.

Reefkeeper.co.uk have 1000w bulbs in 10,000k and 20,000k. I know i want to use 1000w bulbs over my new tank, 3 of them to be presice. I was thinking about going for 7w per gallon, i just cant decide on the temperature of the bulbs 10,000k or 20,000k and what to suppliment them with in the way of actinics. Any ideas.

Id much prefer to use the 20,000k bulbs. If im using 3000W @ 20,000k how much Actinic do i need

Does anyone use these out there? And if you do, do you like it? I found fixtures out there that come with a bulb for $170 (if I looked correctly, catalog is in the car, and too lazy to get it) and was thinking of picking one up and buying a new bulb, but don't know where else to look besides Champion lighting (Hamilton Tech does not seem to have a 1000 Watt MH bulb). By the way, for those of you who know more about lights, they are hydroponics lights with a 2 year warranty on the ballast (even a bulb warranty, but don't know what Kelvin they are) and the upgraded model is $270 I believe with a 5 year warranty on the ballast.

davelin: Venture bulbs makes a 1000 watt bulb. Use them down in the Center for Tropical Research in the Keys. They (Venture) estimate it at 5500k, but its a little whiter than the Iwasaki, but has a little less PAR than an Iwasaki would at the same wattage (which, unfortunately, Iwasaki doesn't make one). They are very nice bulbs.

ROFLOL. Has less PAR than a bulb which doesn't exist but if it did....

I would skip actinics with either the 10,000k or 20,000k lights. Also, have you thought of using a light mover available in the linear or circular styles? This maybe able to give your corals a more even light field rather than a stationary point sorce, also with some periods of lower light. Maybe you could just use 2 x 1000W with this method too?

Ushio and Aqualine Bushkhe both have 10,000K 1,000 watt MH bulbs in their product lineup. Crisp, crisp white light.

If you want more info on 1000 watt setups, go to reefs.org's chatroom (#reefs in xnet). There are several users that use 1000 watters, and one works for a hydroponic company that sells them. Sanjay is there too, and may lend some assistance.

Thanks for all the info on them, a price correction on the 1000W w/2 year ballast warranty, it's $220, the 400W is $170.
