Out of interest could someone tell me how mushrooms multiply.I have several types but have never noticed any new growth only very small ones that came on the rock getting bigger.I have a few encrusting polyps which spread etc. and my tank is well established.

in the reef auarium mushrooms can reproduse by dragging themselfs short distances on the rocks, leaving behind small fragments of flesh that develope into new mushrooms. This behavior lends itself very well to propagation by cutting up existing shrooms into smaller fragments that can then be held down on the drocks by various methods. A favorite and often used method is to use bridal viel and rubberbands to hold the shroom in place until it takes hold (depending on conditions in your tank days to weeks).

if you do a search here on reefs.org I am sure youl find lots of good threads on the subject.

Thanks Bob. No wonder the guys at the hardware store looked at me odd when I asked them for it.

I need some to cover my overflow to keep snails out of it.

Thanks for the info and posts but I have to say the thought of taking a knife to a healthy specimen fills me with dread,I understand propagating this way is common but what are the success rates?

THANKS!

For me, the success rate has been too good at times. I have to prune mushrooms is certain areas of my tank about once a month to keep them from encroaching on other corals. I swear for every stump that is left, 2 grow back. With the ones I cut off, it is sometimes hard to get the whole head off intact so some look a little ragged. These usually attach and heal on their own, but some don't. I may loose 3 or 4 of the badly cut ones for every 50 I cut off.

i have used this methoud with 100 % sucess for the past 6 months:

cut shroom off leave pedal disc intact.

place shroom in cup of sand and cover cup with bridal viel (wal-mart 98 cents a yard)

dose vitamin c and iodine to prevent infection

wait 10 days shroom attaches to sand glue sand to rock

My success rate is near 100%. I use a rubberband to attach it to the rock which usually ends up as 2 mushrooms. FWIW whatever is left on the rock always grows back bigger than it was, for some reason.
