Shane and Wade,
Hmmmmm, you know the original Nilsen design kind of looks like the EcoTech to me. Actually both designs kind of look like a calcium reactor too

.

Sacha, you can find the price etc on the Myreef Creations web site.

Uh oh! big suprise... myreef creates another product that is mostly somebody else's design. There are some crucial differences of course, he uses cheaper materials
icon_wink.gif
I'm sure myreef's reactor is fine, just totally un-original and from the looks of the pictures at www.ecotechmarine.com, not nearly as well thought out as the ecotech one.

At least geo and ecotech created unique designs, even for run of the mill kalk reactors.

I do need to get my eyes checked! I can't even see the price tag on the materials, or for that matter, tell what thickness the materials are or where they were bought from! By the way, what's the thought process here. I think it's so brilliant to completely enclose the stirrer just in case your reactor weld job leaks. Or maybe including that high quality flex tubing inside the reactor itself. That will last forever I'm sure

I would say the MyReef looks more like the KW design than anything else. How many ways are there to make a Nilsen? I looked at the MyReef website...wow cheaper materials? A Hanna magnetic stirrer vs a home made one on the ecotech. I would go with a hanna any day. Why use flanges on the ETM for the stirrer? What a pain that must be. Looks like cheap airline tubing in it that will be brittle over time too.

I guess MyReef should make a stirrer that sits on top of the reactor and be original huh?
icon_rolleyes.gif
Wow look at PM's CA reactor then LifeReef...think someone copied a design? I don't think so...if a design works why change it? Grow up people...Why not applaud two companies that are helping reefers with lower prices and not quible.

Old aquarist....why doesn't it say when you registered at Reefs? Very interesting...only a few people probably have the priviledge to hide such things.

I don't really know what you mean by telling the quality of materials from the pictures, i'm just going by what other myreef products are out there that use 1/8" extruded tubing and 1/4" sheet. if you read the ecotech marine page its clear that they don't, you won't need glasses. As for the enclosing of the stirrer, I don't know what you mean either because it looks like on the ecotech web page that its fully accessible with keyholed flanges even, I dunno. I've never seen either in person but pictures alone it just looks like the ecotech one is nicer and I just don't agree with myreef's business ethics, that's just my opinion.

Stating someone uses cheaper materials, period, when you've never even seen the product in person, doesn't sound like an opinion, sounds like personal bias. Also, what standard of "business ethics" do you hold to?

I'd suspect that old aquarist's profile was damaged during one our previous episodes when valueweb's drives filled up unexpectedly or during the server move. old aquarist is not any member of the reefs.org staff- I can tell that simply by looking up the IP. The email address is also generic, so no leads there :/

I once thought ecotech reactors were to expensive. But after seeing the price of a Myreef reactor made with inferior parts I would have to change my mind on that one..

Oh hell i'll build my own

or
wait until GEO comes out with a magnetic stirring version

hmm.. I'd say wholly the myreef reactor bears little resemblence to our reactor, but hey people are entitled to their opinions.

the myreef skimmer looks about as close to a bullet knockoff as you can get though.

bish..

Baalz,
Don't wait for geo to come out with the mag stirrer unit. The powerhead units he makes work better then the mag stirring units. I use mag stirres all the time at work. In a kalk reactor you have to run them very slow or the'll mix the whole reactor. IME, they don't do half as good of a job at mixing as the pump unit do. The down side on Geo's pump mixing reactor is he uses a Maxi Jet powerhead. Mine has been running for more then 3 months now with no problems at all. If the pump fails I'll just replace it with an Ehiem.

Also, Geo's pump unit is half what Andy charges for his mag stir unit.

Nice observation Balls. What type of myreef reactor do you have in front of you that your finding inferior parts on? Guess what? I replaced my GEO calcium reactor with a myreef reactor. Do you own both? Can you do a side by side comparison? I loved my GEO reactor because it killed the commercial units in price. I replaced it due to maintenance issues and now I love the myreef reactor.

Well, I think a couple of people found some useful info in the post. The others appear to have known everything to begin with. Danmhippo has ordered one of these too

.

Golfish, no way you can convince me that a power head in this application is better than a stirrer, maybe you need to use the adjustmant knob on the one you have at work. Turn it to the left to slow it down

SPC,
I don't need to convince you, I'm sure your works ok. This comes from experience. The mag stir has been around for a long time, but then again so has the UGF.

They both have their pros and cons. The pump just out does the magnet when it comes to mixing and settling faster. I think the mag units take up less space and are more of a sound unit, less prone to leak or have problems...

Myself and Andy had a discussion about this over the weekend. He too think the mag works better, but then he has never used one with a pump.

BTW, if Andy wasn't able to get the glass installed in the bottom of your reactor you might want to do it. You'll likely run into probelms if you don't..

Hey, useful conversation at last
icon_wink.gif
. I built my own Nilsen reactor, 48" tall, 4" column and I'm now using a Mag 2 instead of the Maxijet which leaked a little too easy IMO. A little too much pump now but I've got it throttled back a bit. I would have built a stirrer type because I like the robustness of the interface from stirrer to water but I didn't have the skills or tools for that. JME.

EE,
I do expect the the MJ powerhead to leak or fail. Funny you mention the Mag 2, That's the only pump I have that leaks. It did seal up nice with some silicone tho.

Don't get me wrong about the Mag stir is a great tool. I just think the pump works better, Specially for some who puts a lot of water through it.

Ai, dat reactor be da buizness. But have you seen the new fluidised calcuim reactors from Deltec, i recon the savings made on the medea could pay for the unit in no time, it manages to disolve every last bit of calk reactor medea because its fludised in gravel.
