I wouldn't recommend hooking up your tapwater directly to your tank in any way shape or form. If something goes wrong you not only flood your home you kill everything in your tank. What you can do is mount the float valve in your sump and then plumb an elevated holding tank (5g bucket works) to the valve. All you have to do then is fill the bucket when its empty. BTW, Kent float valves work great in this manner. I use a setup like that to dose kalk and top off when I am away on trips. I have an auto doser but trust this setup even more when I'm away. It will hold your sump at exactly the same level until the holding tank is empty.
If you chose to run the float valve in the sump, direct from the RO, (I do it with 4 diff sumps) you need a float valve kit. The kit contains a solenoid that shuts of the incomming water when there is pressure on the product water line.
