Wow... I would never imagine that the guys in my fraternity want to all start up tanks. All it took was them seeing my "ghetto" 10 gal, that i've sold in order to get a bigger tank. A couple of guys want to start up a reef tank and some wants to start an agressive tank. I'm stoked that the dudes are really interested in starting up this hobby.

Better get a lock for the hood!
I had a few too many parties in college where ultimately too many drunks fed my 2 oscars too many beers. The water would cloud 2 days later, but they always pulled through. I don't think you'd be as lucky with a reef.

Sounds great they all like it. However, I hope you all take the time to consider who will care for fish during holidays and breaks, and summers off? (I guess you all have that part covered) Enjoy!

HAHA… Yeah fraternity + fish tanks sounds a tad bit disastrous but I think the guys in my house are planning on rigging a makeshift lock for the hood just in case people decided to have the fishes party too.

As for the over the vacation breaks, some of the guys’ home are in Corvallis so they can feed and maintain their tanks if they want to start it up. And for the other guys, I told them that they should definitely wait until winter term, seeing that we only have less than a week of school left.

One guy decided that we should put a tank in the wall instead of patching the hole. He was like we can put a 10 or small gallon tank in the wall. Seems like a cool idea (NOT!), after thinking about for a split second I asked him never to talk again because it was a dumb idea to have in the common area. (freshmen geez... jk)

There are a couple of us in my fraternity that have sw tanks and a couple guys with fw tanks. We have the tanks in our rooms because there is no way the would last in the common areas. I think it would just be asking for disaster, because people don't understand the the time and money that is invested in a tank. We have a hard enough time keep the common areas of the building clean.

Hey, you may want to put bars around the tanks. I like the idea of a predator tank. I had crocodile and he attracted more women over than I ever did. So, the sharks may be a good investment. Maybe that could be utilized for initiation too.

We built our own bar, and one year it did have an aquarium as a centerpiece, with access only from the back of the bar so it was safe. When I lived in the house however my aquarium was in storage, there was no room in our rooms for one to fit easily and it had the survival probability of zero in a common area. When we would through a party ALL furniture on the first floor of the house was removed, all pictures and knickknacks on walls camedown etc there was no way you could easily move a 40 gallon marine aquarium LOL.

I've ALMOST forgotten the smell of a frat house on sunday morning....

Used to go to some frat parties in San Louis Obispo CA. After several drinks/shots/drinking games the gold fish would be taken out of the tank and quickly dipped head first into shots of rum (alcohol contacts the blood directly through the gills). When you're wasted its great fun to watch drunk goldfish try to swim.

It's sad what we'll do when we're young and stupid. Now I'll kick my son's ass if he tries this!

ya, frats do eat that stuff up. I got an officer of the year award for "fish manager". Oscars will take any abuse, my secret was the electric catfish in there. It only takes one person getting shocked before people know better. On a plus side, no ones messed with the volation lionfish yet, that will be interesting.

Man, you guys bring back some great memories. We had 12 tanks in my fraternity, Alpha Sigma Phi. One guy started out with a 10 and it just spun out of control. I ended up breading Jack Demseys. I remember on time, during a party, some dumb ass fed my prise depsey, Brent, a can of pellets. What a mess. That fish was tough. I do have to say that the chicky boom booms love the excuse of a fish tank to come up to your room. While they are there have them check out the cool loft that you have. You know, one thing leads to another.

Ha... Yeah, I've inform the guy that wanted a lionfish that its spine is a poison area and he should be careful when he decides to buy it...

Seeing the look on his face after that tid bit of info, I'm pretty sure he's not going to buy one (or not at least soon).

This thread reminds me of my high school days when I was at a party. The guy that was throwing the party had these huge freshwater tanks with Oscars...his favorite things in life were mean fish, mean dogs, pot, and guns in no particular order. Anyway, at this party (as always) he was bragging about how tough his Oscar was and how it could kill anything you put in the tank. Coincidentally another guy at the party had an Oscar and he said HIS would kick the other Oscars fins. Both went to get the other fish (in a 5 gallon bucket) and bring it back to fight. In the meantime several party attendees blew illegal substance smoke through straws into the hosts fishtank. When he got back with the other persons fish they put it in the tank and he couldn't understand why his fish wouldn't attack the other fish...all it did was swim around slowly and calmly as in a daze! He never did find out the truth.

So, Zip_Case...where do you get your livestock in Corvallis? Any good LFS's?

Haha... that's a great story ReefMole.
There isn't exactly a FS down here in corvallis but there's a place in Albany that sell livestocks at great prices. But being from Wilsonville I just journey up to the LFS in tualatin and portland to buy my livestock when I'm in town. I guess I'll start shopping at this place in Albany because of its great prices but the only thing is he doesn't have much out on display, so you got to call him up and he'll grab whatever you want, then you pick it up. Kinda make it feel like online order but minus the delivery.

I spent a few years at OSU working on my engineering degree, If you don't mind me asking, which house has all of the tanks? I lived a couple of years at the SN house on 10th street.

C Alan-
We visited the SN house on walk-out in 1985 or 86. They showed us a good time. I went to NIU. Were you around then?
