Question, I have a 55 gal reef tank with coral, live rock, a few fish and a
couple shrimp.I have a uv sterilizer rated for up to 300 gal. a protien
skimmer running all the time and a large wet dry sump filter. the water
tests out good ( am 0 nitrites 0 nitrates 0-5 ppm s.g. 1.023 temp 76 calcium
450 alk 3.2 ) I'm running compact flourescent lights 12 hrs.a day . I'm
about to do a water change (20 gal ) , I'm getting overrun with red
planaria, bubble algae, and turf algae. What i was thinking of doing is
taking approx. 1/3 of the coral gravel out, rinsing it off and than boiling
it in water for a few minutes to clean it and kill any planaria left on it ,
than rinsing it again to put back in the tank. Also taking the live rock and
put it a bucket of the salt water that will be discarded with the water
change and scrubbing it with a brush to clean off as much of algae and
planaria as possible. After i get it reduced as much as possible I will
purchase some critters to keep it in check.Do you know where I can purchase
the slug, varians, that eats the red planaria? or do you have any
suggestions on critters that will do a good job on the planaria and algae?
thank you for the help.

Scott,

How long has your tank been up and running? It is normal to have algael blooms during the tanks first year.

Why are you using crushed coral? You would be better served going with a deep sand band (DSB). Do yourself a favor and do a search on it.
