Yet, with the 4,000+ members on this board, only 5 people really care enough about corals and their understanding of them to join the thread above and debate the issues.

It's apathy like this that allows the American Circus to run our country. (And no, I don't mean Bush).

No offense, Dr., but if you would like to attract participants in a discussion, maybe you shouldn't insult them right off the bat in the Topic heading. For me, someone starting a thread by calling everyone ignorant, is a red flag to avoid it. While it very well may be a serious discussion, I wouldn't ever find that out.
My Grandma used to say something about attracting more bees with honey.

Alas, we can't edit subjects.

And, if a person is discouraged so quickly....

If it's a reef related topic, then it belongs in this forum not "the sump". The Sump is for topics other than reef related. Obviously your discussion is reef related so why didn't you start it in this forum? Maybe more of those 4000+ members would have responded if you had.

My point, redirecting people from one forum to another is as I said...spam. And if I'm not mistaken, frowned upon by the admins/mods of this board. It doesn't belong here.

Pardon me for poking my nose into this affair, but I really don't see what's so offensive or inappropriate about Brian's post.

The admins/mods on this board are a wee bit more flexible, understanding, mature, and fair-handed then you give them credit for. Of course, this is comparatively speaking ...

Len- actually, I think MiNdErAsR just happens to agree with me is all. I voiced mild displeasure over Sump advertisements in the main forum to him during a discussion earlier in the day on IRC.

In reality, advertisements for The Sump have as little place in the main forum as do requests for IDs, items for sale, and questions for board moderators. Each has it's own place.

BTW, I resent your accusing me of being mature

Brian:
There are a lot of problems in the world, and many of us are trying to solve a variety of them, so let's keep this issue in perspective: it's one of many, and IMO, not the biggest.

That said, my curiosity was aroused by the quote about the pH drop due to atmospheric CO2. The articles that I've read have not suggested a specific number (that I recall anyway), though they have given projections for the supersaturation of CaCO3 (e.g., “Geochemical Consequences of Increased Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide on Coral Reefs” by Joan A. Kleypas et. al. Science article in Science, April 2, 1999) .

Have you seen any specific projections of pH?

No, I have yet to see any specific numbers.

I don't know if I posted it on the other thread, but one researcher quoted a 1970's study that still is widely accepted today. In it, the researcher shows the much greater buffering capacity that silicas have in water than carbonates, and thinks the problems will be less pH related because it won't change significantly.

On the other hand, I also just saw a re-working of some data today that shows a cooling in some of the Pacific waters over the past 3-4 years. The researchers had previously seen a warming trend, but have since used a more powerful analytical tool. However, they note that strong ENSO events distort buoy measurements, and this occured in 1998-1999. I came away from the email with nothing.

Randy,

There is a recent conversation on the coral list about atmospheric co2 affecting ocean pH. Check the archives from the last 2 weeks for details.

This got me to thinking, some would say a skill I lack but today it happened.

If the moderators redirect or "Bump" a non reef related topic to the sump. Why would they not take this clearly "Reef Related" topic and change its location to the general reefkeeping forum?

It's not like people in the sump want to be bothered by fish and invert discussion

Randy,

I have read several articles which attempt to bound the pH affect of increasing atmospheric CO2, the decreases I recall were 0.2 to 0.5.

I will see if I can find the citations.

I haven't found anything specific yet, but here is Joanie Kleypas's site:

It is a FACT that 15% of the worlds hard corals died in the bleaching event of 1998. You can endlessly debate the "why" but the fact remains.
