If you're concerned with noise, don't put a Carlson surge device on your reef - entertaining to watch, but pretty loud (might induce spontaneous bed wetting as well ; > ). Also, don't connect Rio pumps to X-10 controllers as a wavemaker: The Rio pumps almost always chatter on startup and the X-10 controllers make a significant 'CLACK!' when they turn on or off. (I'd like to acknowledge that Rio recommends against connecting thier pumps to wave timers).

Oh yeah, avoid mantis and pistol shrimp (hey, some people just think they're neat) - they're all set with thier own noisemakers for the party davelin mentioned.

Also, consider the type of overflow/surface skimming you're going to use... it could create a good bit of noise if not designed to minimize gurgling.

Certain types of coral are known as late night partiers, but you should be able to curtail that with an early bed time.

Seriously, it depends on what type of equipment you use. In general, the loudest parts of my reef tank are the pump and the skimmer. I have a Top Fathom skimmer which has a very loud venturi and a Little Giant pump that puts out a constant hum. The loudest is by far the venturi on the skimmer, but you could always use a countercurrent air driven skimmer and reduce the noise, or put a cap on the venturi tube to reduce noise. Other than that, just don't buy any sarcophyton, they're really loud.

If you use the correct equip you shouldn't have any noise. The only major noise you could have would come from the over flow(crashing water) and the pump(humming).Once you get going on it you'll quickly find ways around any noise.
Good Luck,
Brad
