hello!
my mom has been fighting cancer for the past 4 years, and I was just wondering if you guys know of any recent break-throughs in the cancer fight.
I feel that if I show my mom any breakthoughs she will become more positive and have more hope.
my mom has been my hero because she has always been positive and she is always smiling, but as her hair just started falling out for the 3rd time I think shes losing hope.
anything will be great
thanks
ryan

My Mom has been through the treatment for Thyroid cancer, one of the most treatable forms, so she is doing well, thanks. She found a lot of strength from researching the condition in books and on-line. I would encourage researching things on-line, specifically looking for info pertaining to the particular cancer she has.
Things are improving rapidly in the fight against cancer and even the best doctor can not possibly keep up with all the inovations.
[Kinda like reefkeeping, we learn so much by sharing and asking questions of each other]. My Mom found that she was able to keep on top of all the suggested treatments and make sure that the doctors involved kept on their toes.
Of course, Mom is full of grace and takes everything one day at a time. She continues to be the leader of the 'gal pack' and care for the grandmothers when she is not actively undergoing treatments.
I guess many folks need to keep involved to keep vital. If your Mom is that way then see what you can do to help her stay involved.
She may have other interests or outlets that keep her feeling alive, so find a way to help and encourage her to do those, too.

I guess we always need to love each other as much as we can while we are here.

All the best, Humu.

There are a large number of cancer drugs in clinical trials right now.
Statins seem promising, but I haven't heard anything from a phase III trial (that's where the effectiveness is measured); just the safety studies (phase I or II) - which show the drugs are well tolerated in humans.

The company I work for has a few drugs in phase III right now, but I can't say much about them (non-disclosure agreements and such).

I think every pharma company has drugs both in trials and in the pipeline. If they don't they'll disappear in a few years.

It does take a long time to get these studies started and finally wrapped up.

There are some promising experimental drugs out there, check out JAMA and NEJM for the latest.

Good luck to you all.

I had a good friend who had stage 4 colon cancer that spread to her liver and pancreas. After extensive chemo sessions and many ectomies, she has been cancer free now for a year.

I suggest reading the book by Lance Armstrong, who was near death from cancerous tumors all over his body and in his brain. He battled back and won 3 Tour De France's now. My friend found it to be one of the most inspiring books she could have read, and I've wanted to go read it myself. It may help her. I'm a huge believef in mind over body, and if you can win the fight in your head, the body may follow. It's so hard to convince yourself, but that is the key.

Good luck and best wishes,
Brian

Search the Internet for Beta Glucan. It is a non specific immune booster that is being used in trials now. It is a complex carbohydrate with zero side effects. It can be used with any other treatments, no problem. I lost my father to cancer many years ago. I will remember your Mom in prayer.

I'm a Christian and I know that Prayer works. Sometimes God allows us to go through trials like this to strengthen our Faith in Him. Since God is the creator, I'm sure He knows how to fix the problem.

I'll be remembering your mom in my prayers too.

my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer about 2 years ago, she underwent a mascectomy and chemo+radiation therapy. She is fine now and kept very alive during the treatment process. I think the best thing you can do is stay close to her and make her understand you are there for her. There is nothing like family to keep up one's morale.

My best wishes are with you

Hello, humu.

My mom has liver cancer and still getting treatment. The first doctor she went to, didn't do much for her only make the cancer worst. That doctor did not know much about any treatment but act like he does. Perform surgery on my mom which did not need to. After a month under his care, my mom condition grew worst fast. My dad happen to run into another lady at the hospital and she recomended another cancer treatment hospital in Pitsburg. My dad made un appointment with the new hospital and flew my mom there three days later. She was sent to a specialist doctor which only treat cancer patients. They give her new treatment, which has been successfull for many patitients. My mom condition has been improving. What I am saying is, do not stay with one doctor. Do a lot of research. Go to hospital that treat cancer patients. Talk to people that have same sickness and get info from them. Sorry about the miss spelling.

Matt.

Sorry to hear about your mom. My mom was diagnosed with lung cancer last December and after chemo and radiation the doctor said all he saw was scar tissue. I just took her last Friday to have her CT scan done and will find out the results on the 21st. It's hard to deal with this and all I can offer is to be there for her and make each day special for her. Also take some time for yourself. Your mom and you will be in my prayers. Humu,
The HOuston Medical complex just had their annual cancer survivor party, there were over 500+ participants. These people were all treated in the Houston Medical Complex. You need to bring her to Houston it's the best in the country at fighting cancer.
God Bless your Mom.

One needs to realize that cancer is not a single disease. What cures one won't touch another. So, I'd suggest sticking with a good oncologist and doing a little research on your own.
Beware of "miracle cures" that have no side effects (as an aside, being a pharmacist with a M.S. in pharmacology, if a drug has NO side effects, chances are it's pharmacologically inactive) and treat every kind of cancer or disease known to man. There are people out there that have no morals or compassion and will do whatever is needed to make money. Another clue as to whether a certain agent is actually for real is do the promotions rely heavily on testimonials or do they show actual data that suggests the drug works vs. known methods.
Probably the best advice I've seen so far on this thread is to keep her vital and active. Even if the cancer DOES end up taking her life (let's face it, we all have to go sometime!), she can be a winner by having the best quality of life possible.
My prayers are with you & her.

I'm not a doctor, nor do I play one on TV. But there's a company called NeoRx that has a pretty neat technology of treating certain cancers by getting the treatments to ride on select proteins. This targeting technology leaves the good cells alone and goes after only the cancerous ones, thereby minimizing the side effects of the usual drug and chemo treatments. They've had some promising clinical trials and few setbacks.
I guess the point is, there are many different theories out there on the treatment of cancer and many bio firms out there working on it, so there is continuous progress toward curing this disease and many success stories.
There's plenty to be hopeful for.
Good Luck
