I just purchased a Hamilton deluxe MH + VHO hood and the ballast for the unit is freakin' NOISY!!! It sounds like a bad/loud refrigerator inside an aluminum box. I was told by Hamilton there was a break-in period before it quiets down. Any truth to this or are they just hoping I get used to it? I was thinking about setting the unit on some mouse pads to dampen the vibration. Any risk of melting these? Any other ideas? The ballast is in my cabinet (no sump) with the doors closed and is still pretty loud.

I don't have any experience with the hamilton ballasts but to quiet it down, you could glue those mouse pads to the bottom of some tile and set the ballast on the tile itself.

Sometimes they are loud. Mostly they aren't. I am not aware of break in reducing the noise at all. I have been in the electrical field for 20 ears, from installation to engineering and that sounds like something an electrician would tell a customer so he doesn't have to replace the ballast.
