Start with a cage containing five monkeys. Inside the cage, hang a banana on a string and place a set of stairs under it. Before long, a monkey will go to the stairs and start to climb towards the banana. As soon as he touches the stairs, spray all of the other monkeys with cold water.

After a while, another monkey makes an attempt with the same result - all the other monkeys are sprayed with cold water. Pretty soon, when another monkey tries to climb the stairs, the other monkeys will try to prevent it.

Now, put away the cold water. Remove one monkey from the cage and replace it with a new one. The new monkey sees the banana and wants to climb the stairs. To his surprise and horror, all of the other monkeys attack him. After another attempt and attack, he knows that if he tries to
climb the stairs, he will be assaulted.

Next, remove another of the original five monkeys and replace it with a new one. The newcomer goes to the stairs and is attacked. The previous newcomer takes part in the punishment with enthusiasm!

Likewise, replace a third original monkey with a new one, then a fourth, then the fifth.

Every time the newest monkey takes to the stairs, he is attacked. The monkeys that are beating him have no idea why they were not permitted to climb the stairs or why they are participating in the beating of the newest monkey.

After replacing all the original monkeys, none of the remaining monkeys have ever been sprayed with cold water. Nevertheless, no monkey ever again approaches the stairs to try for the banana. Why not?

Because as far as they know that's the way it's always been done around here.

hi.
One of the monkey removed from the cage mentioned above attempted to attack another monkey in a "normal" cage. He/she was pushed onto the floor, and learn a new lesson from the "natives."

"Don't ask me why I am doing this... I only know that's what everybody else is doing."

Now, what the he11 does the money and the banana have to do with reef?

I think what drewdawg is trying to say is that some people just flame away, not knowing why they are flaming, but based upon what everyone else is doing, he/she will do it too!

I mean after all if everyone is flamming this person then it has to right, right?

I know what "money" does to my reef, but I refuse to comment on the banana part, it's none of your business.

Dan, it is a well-known "secret" that smashed banana is essential to the health of Xenia and SPS corals. So don't try to hide this from us reefers, since we all knew about it!

What is the old saying around here?

I think it was "if you want a flame free board, go on over to RC"
Bwaha ha ha hahahahahahhaha.

Does that mean we all learned to touch our monkey because that is what has been done for years and years?

Well, thats how you might do things, but I don't flame just because others are. I flame if it's called for. You might be limited to the same intelligence level of a monkey but don't assume the rest of us are.

Actually Dr. Reef I think it does.

Several of posters have proven my point perfectly. The reason for the post is to demonstrate the need for civil discussions; others should be allowed to disagree with the masses without being attacked. Especially when the attackers have no firsthand experience in what they are attacking for.

Actually, I just saw the same post on RC. There are alot more responses here, and funny ones at that. Just remember, if monkeys could talk, they would simply discuss with the errant monkey his mistake of trying to go for the banana. If friendly discussion did not persuade him, they would become more hostile and start flaming him for his stupid behavior, and when that failed, then they would beat the **** out of him, which he probably deserved for not listening to the rest of the monkeys to begin with.

It takes a monkey to make a mistake worthy of flaming. Your point is dont persicute the ignorant. I say there is no room for ignorance when the well being of another organism possibly hundreds are concerned. Why is it so hard to READ THE INSTRUCTIONS FIRST.

Im not talking about the hair algie threads, or even the "can i put a tang in a 55" threads. Im refering to the "bought this pretty yellow fish the other day, and he doesn't look well. I have a 10 gallon bare bottom tank with nothing but water and an air operated diver man, do you think that could have upset him" threads.

or better than that the "my 300 gallon reef exploded, i dont know whats wrong my 10mm glass tank looked great." Nice one Tony!!
