Generally the answer to this is NO. If you are trying to keep a live deep sand bed the micro organisms that exist there will turn turn the sand over on their own just fine. They don't need help from any big clumsy creatures trying to eat all your microlife. Usually anything that roots around in the sand is eating all the creatures that you wanted in the sand bed in the first place.
