I recently purchased a yellow devil finger leather and it opens up nicely and has many bumps but never any polyps. It is sitting in the top third of my aquarium under two 55 watt power compacts in a 29 gallon tank. Any thoughts or ideas as to why no polyps. I have had this coral for two weeks now and still no polyps. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

I have two, and it's been my experience that when moved they take a while to adjust. I would place it as high as you can with medium flow and wait a few weeks. They tend to open more under high light. Of the two I have, the one at the top within 6" of a 250 Iwasaki has a great deal more polyps opened than the bigger one getting less light.

I have one that has grown consideribly in the last 8 months, but few polyps open, say one every square centimeter or so. Give it time. I am proof that they are hard to kill!

I have one for almost a year now and it hasn't extended any polyps, but it continues to grow.

yeah those things are pretty random... mine would alternately close up, retract its polyps, or be wide open and beautiful for weeks at a time, for no apparent reason, and with no apparent harmful effects. Just ride it out.

I started out with a small 4" colony I had shipped mail order about a year ago.. The bag poped the colony looked bad. It had opened up in about a week and by a month had obvious growth with hundreds of white polyps all over it.

Today 1 year later I have wacked it several times it grows like a weed. The colony is 12" across after 4 major cuttings of 4" or larger. It lives under med current and strong MH light at the bottom of a 120 show tank.

Is one of my favorite corals. Growth is very fast and it is a real eye catcher.
