I believe Marine Depot has it. No indication of the quantity you get. Not even in my wholesale literature and the pic of the bottle make me think it isn't an awful lot. I think DT's is still likely to be a better buy.
The stuff comes in a 2-2.5 oz glass pump bottle. It is concentrated Nannochloropsis that you keep in the FREEZER.
Obviously the stuff is dead. I've heard that it's repackaged instant algae from Reed Mariculture, who by the way only sells by the liter for aquaculture uses.
The stuff is different from DT's in that it is dead, but much more concentrated since all the water has been removed. The stuff has a thick consistency and is pumpable directly out of the freezer. It has an extremely long shelf life when frozen.
I like the product and find it easier to procure and keep than DT's. I buy it from Jeff's Exotic Fish.
I have been using it for about a month. Here is what I have noticed.
Greater polyp extention.
Noticable growth on my coco worm
an explosion of zoo plankton
increase in the number of common feather dusters
I had used DT's for a year prior.
I think the stuff is pretty good. I don't know if www.Advancedaquatics is shipping or not, but I shop their store and picked mine up there.
True dos to much you can have alga blooms. Read marine reef annual 2002. Rob toonen did a write up on common avalible photoplanton. Seems the alga paste is par and cost alot less. Dt is still the best so if you wanna spend the most get dt. If you want Liquidlife get the alga paste for alot less. First get the mag and decide for yourself.
I'm currently experimenting with both Liquidlife and DT, although I highly doubt I'll observe any quantifiable difference. Dollar for dollar, I believe them to be comparable (Liquidlife is very concentrated). For now, I like the fact that DT is life phytoplankton. I like the fact that Liquidlife contains 3 species of phytoplankton, and has an infinate shelf-life so long as it is kept in the freezer (because of it's viscosity, it never becomes frozen). Both are easy to dose.
I'll let people know my opinion, if I ever formulate one
I use the liquidlife pump. I like it and notice the difference since I started using it. I can also tell the difference right after dosing it too. My large brain coral will get HUGE after dosing and looks great. My sea plume and sea whip (gorgonians) seem to like it as well.
And yes you will get an algae bloom if you dose too much. You will get this if you follow the instructions on the bottle. I figured three pumps evrey three days for my 80 gallon with 30 gallon refugium. I have cut back to one pump now about every four days and have a lot less to scrap off the front glass. Thats was the only problem, getting algae on the fron glass. So cutting back did help.
buy the mag. It shows usa liquid life and alga paste from brine shimp are almost the same in every way but price. The alga paste is way cheaper same stuff. Most of all the stuff tested is the same type but difference amounts. Buy the mag and see for yourself.Even if the dt is one type it had better growth of larval whatever Rob toonen tested but read it for yourself
You reefers know that Liquidlife makes a few products. One of them is called "Bioplankton" which comes in a little pump bottle. The second is what they call "Liquidlife Live phytoplankton and Rotifier Live" which comes in a bottle just like DT's.
I know that the stuff in the Bioplankton bottle is dead.
I wanted to know the difference between Liquidlife "LIVE" Phytoplankton vs. DT's.
I did read the article by Rob Toonen. Very good article indeed. But, I was wondering if anyone here by experience tried the Liquidlife "LIVE" phytoplankton vs. DT's. Not the Bioplankton.
Liquidlife's live bioplankton is the same product as DT - that is, live Nannochlorpois oculata. Concentrations vary, however.
If we go by the manufacturers instructions, DT is a far better buy. DT suggests 1 ounze per 100 gallons, while Liquidlife suggests 8 ounces per 100 gallons. DT is $1.33/ounce, while Liquidlife is $0.63/ounce. Therefore, DT is approx. four times as effective per dollar.
Of course, these are only manufacturer's suggestions. One would need to quantify the actual mass of N.oculata per product to do a proper value comparision.
yeah I was talking Liquid life bioplankton paste. never got the live part. Never saw it so assumed paste. But for me I would get the cheapest. Personally I never notice much /any diff when I used DT for a year. I feed good make my own foods I even add a little paste to it. But even before I had hundreds of tube worms good life in the sand bed and 3 types of breeding snail. Guess my eyes aren't good enough. But it have been proven in a control enviroment I just like to see it in my tank JMO
