I have a 27 G tank with only 1 fluorescent light. I know that I do not have enough light to have most corals. My question is, are there any corals of any type that thrives in low intensity light. I have 1 Maroon Clown, 1 Flame Angel,2 Bleenies and some hermit crabs.

Mushrooms may be ok. You can usually buy a single shroom at the LFS. Plant it in there and see how it does for a month or so. If it's "reaching" towards the light, then move it someplace brigher, closer and or higher in the tank. Your results will be much better with a good flourescent tube such as a 10,000K.

why not just throw on another light?! then the mushrooms can be happy, instead of just alive. you can have a really beautiful tank with just an assortment of different mushrooms!

I'd have to agree, get more light. Won't cost much to put in another flourescent. If your on a tight budget look in ebay. There are some used sets in there from time to time.

BCReefer,

If you want I have a an extra NO ballast here with lamp holders. If you are going to the meeting this weekend let me know and I can bring it for ya..

It's a dual 30W ballast. perfect for a 27 tank.

I wouldn't try mushrooms under 1 flourescent, i think they'll bleach. We had tried some eclipse systems w/ 2 lamps set up as "reef tanks" at the shop which turned out to be a flop. Even mushrooms became translucent and trumpeted. Custom sea life makes very economical "brite lights". How long is the tank? They make 24" ones that should cost around a hundred bucks or so w/ 1 65w PC smart lamp.

Monkeyboy!
I have several types of shrooms in my mini 20g, reef tank.
2-3 of them are trumpeted,is that a sign that they don't like something?
They might need more light?

That's a sign that they are not getting sufficient light in their natural state, so they're stretching towards the light and making their bodies bigger to allow for more surface area exposed to light. They might bleach, they might not. My guess is they'll be fine. I have mushrooms that have fallen off and are behind my rocks and they stretch up towards the tiny amounts of light that filter through the rock (very indirect) and they still retain their coloration. Obviously, it would be better to give it more light, but if that's not feasible, then make sure whatever light you do have is a good spectrum and that the bulbs are kept new.
