What size Maxi jet to replace Rio 600's?

Hi all,

I want to replace my RIO 600 powerheads (read about the problems and mine are acting qwerky after only 8 months)that came with my CPR refugium and Bak-Pak II skimmer and remember seing somewhere that maxi-jet power heads are normally used as relacement pumps for RIO's but I don't know which model of Maxi-Jets to buy.
What model replaces the RIO 600 and if it is maxi-jet, do I need to mod anything to hook on the the CPR products I have?

I replaced the Rio 600 that came on my BakPak2R with a MJ 1200 with Venturi kit. I also use a MJ 1200 on the Remora skimmer on my other tank.
I use MJ 600's in both the 55 reef and 38 FOWLR. The 600's give plenty of flow for my soft and LPS corals.

I replaced mine on my bakpak with a rio 900. Somewhere I read it (900) was supposed to fit into the overflow box. Mine didn't, so I built my own.

I also read you don't need to buy the venturi kit. You taket the piece of tubing supplied witht the Maxi, and shove it into the intake of the pump. I took it apart and shoved it in until it was just flush with the plastic impeller guard. I put the air valve on the other end, and wallah.

I thought 1200's were right but wasn't sure.
I wonder why Rio doesn't address the problem with there power heads.

If you want to replace the skimmer pump with a maxi you will need the venturi kit which you can find a premium aquatics http://www.premiumaquatics.com/thestore/prods/MJ-VENT.html

I tried to connect my MJ900 Powerhead to my CPR skimmer and it fits perfectly. You shouldnt need any mods to conntect them.

You can get more info from www.cprusa.com They have bulletin boards where you can ask these questions directly to CPR for their recommendation.

I'm glad you posted the link. I'm doing the same conversion myself tonight. I was wondering exactly what I would need to complete it. I've got alot of good ideas from these boards.
