This morning I decided to change my photo period. The lights came on at noon and went off at 3:00am to accompany my sleeping schedule. I have some excess algea growth on the glass that I think was being caused by sunlight ghanging thew photo periodto about 20 hours. I changed the timer so they would come on at 8:30am and go off at 11:00. Needless to say nothing was ready for the change in times. When the lights came on there were thousands of mysis shrimp swimming everywhere! I had absolutly no idea these things were in there. My Royal Gramma was the first one out and had an all you can eat buffet. Just thought Id share this with the reefers that dont think the have a very good bug population. Just because you never see them doesnt mean you dont have any.

I have heard many people who grow Mysid shrimps in refugea. Where did you get the starter colony from, were they hitch hikers? I think they would be great to have breeding in the refugia, just think of all the food that would be available. Do you know if they have a planktonic phase in their life cycle?

Your guess is as good as mine. The best I can come up with is the fact that my LFS let me go through their tanks and syphon out anything I wanted with my baster. I did some major hunting when I set up my tank a couple months ago and sucked up anything that moved. I figure I must have cotten a couple mysis and they spread like a plague. They evidently breed fairly easy. I will be setting up a refugim as soon as I can come up with money for an overflow. As far as planktonic stages I have absolutly no idea.

It may be worth looking into as planctonic stages in an organisms life cycle are major coral chow. If i had a fuge, id also have strombus snails like Monkeyboy, and probably some of those bunny snails too (from ISPF). Then my refugeum would be like a canteen.
