My backpack protein skimmer uses a Rio 600 power head. I clean the power head at least once a month and I use the CPR overflow with a sponge for a pre-filter. The first pump I had on there lasted around 4 months before I had to by a new one. The new pump stops working about every two weeks and I have to take it apart and clean it. I just cleaned it two days ago and it is hardly running my skimmer already. I use all Maxi-jets in my tank other than the skimmer and I have never cleaned them. Can I put a Maxi-jet on my skimmer? If not what else can I do to fix the Rio issue? Thanks for your help.

Billan,
Put a Maxi-Jet 1200 with Venturi kit on it; clean it regularly, and forget it!! I replaced the Rio on my Bak Pak2R with this mod about 9 months ago. This is on a 38 FOWLR.
I've also got another MJ 1200 on a Remora on my 55 reef. It's been running for nearly 3 years, first on a Knop Skimmer, then on the current Remora.
I also have half a dozen MJ powerheads between the two tanks and all have performed flawlessly.

I too feal your pain.
I just ordered a maxi-jet 1200 to replace my rio 600 on my Bak-Pak II.
Am told its a useable replacement that doesn't require any mods to fit the intake pipe on the Bak-Pak II.
It will also give you a little more flow.
I don't know if it will just drop into your skimmer pre-filter box. I don't have one to worry about. The only thing I can tell you is I asked the same question last friday and everyone said to go with the MJ1200 and to order the venturi kit.
Someone else stated that if you want, you can forgo the venturi kit and just poke a hole in the screen of the inlet to the impeller and run a piece of airline up the inlet and stop it just below the impeller.
I am going ahead and ordering the kit though. Just don't want another DIY tinker each other day to keep it going senario. But it sounds like this would work.
I ordered mine from Premium aquatics since I don't have a LFS that carries MJ and I think it was like 20.00 for one.

I have been using a CPR with the rio for about a year and a half and haven't had to do anything. In fact it is lucky if a clean it. (Maybe 4 or 5 times)It is good to know that you have had luck with the Maxi Jets. If I ever need to change I will go that route...

Billan,

I got my MJ1200 today.
This workes alot better than the Rio!
I hooked mine up with the venturi kit and not only is there a higher flow but the difused bubbles are very finer and very thicker.
This is a must do if you want to replace that Rio!

i noticed that the rio 600rvt is 200gph, the maxi jet is 295gph! quiet and increase! any problems associated w/ this? i know it will make more bubbles but any problems like overflowing or more bubbles into the tank?

i am getting a used backpack. i am gonnaa pick up the maxijet 1200 and a turbo venturi kit. sucks they are out of them at premium aquatics right now though

No, the MJ 1200 won't "overflow" the BakPak. The only real problem I have with mine is pretty common from what I've read here: anytime I do anything in the tank, the BakPak bubbles for several hours. Just a minor inconvenience, IMO.

The MJ will NOT drop into your skimmer pre-filter box. It's a lot wider than the Rio.
