the subject says it all. i have this crud that grows in the shaddy areas on the substrate in one little spot in my tank. i can tell where it's going to pop up because it makes gas bubbles in the sustrate before it grows to the surface. none of my snails or crabs seem to want to have anything to do with it. i scoop it out and have been doing weekly water changes to get rid of it, but it keeps popping back up. my nitrates 0, and phosphates almost 0. i think the algea is a result of a short period of over feeding that has been corrected. anyone know what this stuff is and how to get rid if it?

Crabby,

You are probably right about the cause - overfeeding.

I suggest you get a new toothbrush and give the algae a light scrubbing if it is on LR. If it is on sand, I recommend getting a turkey baster and blasting away at it a couple of times. Either way, the freed algae junk will then get sucked up by your skimmer.
