I just got a free Cooper brand 400W ballast. Can I run a 175W bulb on it? I would think no but I recently seen a guy running a 250W bulb on what I think is the same ballast. Would it work but just burn the light out very very prematurely????????

Please stop laughing for a moment and answer my question!

Nope ... these bulbs are not like florescent bulbs which can be run on different ballasts. You must run a 175 on 175W Ballast and similarly a 400 on a 400W ballast. Im not sure about the effects on the bulb, and if it would even fire at all. My assumptions are that it might fire but may overheat or crack. Im not sure if they use the same materials in the 175 and the 400s. I would think that they use thinner glass casings and thinner metal/wires in the 175W.
