Now I know I might here you say "your crazy" or "just plain stupid". But I can live with that.

I run a 125gal reef. It is a LPS and Softy tank. I run 6 55watt PC's. Filtration is 4inches of SD sand and Bryopsis in my 32 gallon refugium which is also home to my 4.5 inch Clown Mantis. I have done the calurpa thing but I don't leave my lights on 24/7 since I sleep 3 feet away from my tank. So the calurpa will spawn and die all the time which basically killes my filtration.

Since it is my refugium I put 50 lbs of sd sand and 25lbs of LR in it for organisims and my Mantis to live in. Well there was a little Bryopsis left on the rock that was in my old 15 gallon. I have delt with it before in the 15 gallon and it was a pain in the A** if you know what I mean. I started to think. I can I let this me my filtration. It does not spawn like calurpa atleast I have not seen it happen. It is a very tight growing plant that is exellent for micro organisims to live in. So far the tank has been running with out any problems since I put my refugium in June.

Just thought I would share my findings with everyone on this wonderful board.

Alex

P.S. I am not crazy for keeping Mantis or using Bryopsis for filtration!!!

Now there's an idea hippo. Plumb your waterbed to your tank. Enlarge your water column. Be at one with your reef. We'll call it the "coral-beautyrest", or maybe the "reef-complete-nite-sleep".

Hi Alex,
I have an ATS system. I don't run the light in it much right now but when I did, Bryopsis was very present. The algae never got out of the scrubber but ATS is very different than a static sump/refugium. Be careful, Bryopsis can become unruly. Check out the book Dynamic Aquaria for natural method filtration ideas.
Sounds like you are on to something.

coral beautyrest; hehehe good one. I have been growing Bryopsis in my fugium for months along with ]Caulerpa racemosa, Ventricaria ventricosa, Caulerpa floridana and Halimeda copiosa. I export a little each month from all of them, seems to be working great for my reef
