30gal tall what to do with it?????

I have a 30 gallon tall aquarium 24" x 12" x 24" and I want to turn it into a saltwater aquarium but I want to not have a hood on it like I see a lot of people do with metal halides just let a light hang over the water about 12" away from the tank. Anyway, what should I set it up as a fish only or reef? and what fish a least prone to leap out?

I happen to like that particular tank for a "nano" fish only. But if you're going to use a metal halide pendant then it's really a waste not to use it for a reef. It's just a little strangely shaped for a reef since ideally you want width in a reef not height. I have a 250w iwasaki mh pendant over my 15g sps tank. Same footprint as the 30 hi just half as tall. Works great.

I would like to do a 30 hi as a fowlr with power compacts in a hood. Mushrooms and clean up crew with a pair of Black-fin gobies and pistol shrimp, or maybe a jawfish and a bicolor blenny. Jumpers all. So I would do either a fowlr with hood or a reef with mh pendant if it were me.

Your tank may be perfect for Bat-fish or the seahorses.
