I handled it this way, I was about 44 years old before I felt I could afford the expense of a reef tank and not have to worry about buying the best equipment. Once we were in this position, it was no problem. :)

I handle it this way,

I can understand she doesn't understand, that's perfectly well understandable as I don't understand the obsession of her other hobbies as she understands them. She understand that I don't understand perfectly. We live in harmony that we both doesn't understand each other's hobby, but we understand that.

Being a understanding husband, I moved my tank to my office using office expense...........

I hope you have a back up system at home just in case anything happens to the tank at work

Simple...get her as hooked on the hobby as you are!

My wife just called me downstairs to report her discovery of our pair (now mated pair) of maroon clownfish's first clutch of eggs!

Before 9/11 I used to work a second job. That money was "my" money. Not to get the little lady too upset with me spending "my" money, I would buy things in dribs and drabs. I would never go out and spend big money in one day.

My wife wanted the tank as a decorator touch to the house. In fact, she was disappointed I didn't go for a 5' instead of a 4'.

Of course, her mental image of the price tag was off by an order of magnitude...

She bought 75$ worth of panties from Victoria's Secret this week; she has her 'hobbies' and I have mine (although we both really enjoy the tank) :)

I do get to set up a new small reef tank (maybe I can still sell a 75 gallon as small) in the the new house 8) . We are then gonna leave the 125 g for the fish and HER bastard picasso trigger. Works for me.

I, too, had to wait a very long time before I could afford this hobby. Now that my sons are grown and live miles away, I finally have my tank. My sig other has a very expensive hobby, too - he bulds and flies RC Airplanes - At least my corals don't crash . . . knock on wood . . .
We don't comment on each other's expensive hobbies . . .

My wife had forbidden me from getting a tank until I discovered the phrase Nano at the Workplace. Well nobody told me how bad an algae outbreak could look in a nano. So I set on building a larger tank. Like JohnD, I work two jobs so I can have "my" money (yeh right) and I buy in dribs and drabs.
