My hermits are disappearing (a snail or two has, too). What is eating them? Certainly none of my fish. I don't have fish that eat hermits -they're all community fish. I am finding long, thin strands of sand casings, perhaps an organism's waste? Could my disappearing hermits and the casing be related to the same organism? What is it? Will it harm my fish?

familiarize yourself with a few of the hermits. wait a few days and see if any of the empty shells on the sand bed belonged to one of those. if you find one take it out and investigate it. if you have something like a mantis shrimp in there, there will probably be a hole about the diameter of a bb in it. also, my bluelegs kill each other all the time

Have you gotten in any new live rock. Could also be a crab that you have not seen . I got one in the other day did not know he was ther euntil I found a dead snail or 2 and started to investagate and found him hiding under a rock. You might try getting out a flash light late at night and watching to see if you see any new guys creaping around.. Good luck

Can you list your fish please?

What about other animals in there?
More info will help.
Are you sure your hermits haven't just traded up to new bigger shells?

Could be a hitchhiker crab that you haven't seen yet.

Try checking the tank at night.

are all the shells dropping or ending up in the same spot?? If so you probably have a Mantis shrimp that hitched a ride into your tank.

Those little sand casings are probably just spaghetti worms trying to migrate someplace else they are harmless
